I have this fic up in Pages of True Love but maybe some of you don't go there, so here it is.
This picks up right where Dawson and Joey are talking on the picknick bench, right before they cut to The Creek in the finally.
Everything that happened in the show is still happened.
Disclaimer: Of coarse I don't own any charaters or rights to any of the material.
Let me know what you think?
The Chef, The Sheriff, and The Prom Queen
[Scene: Dawsons Back Yard. Dawson is sitting at the picnic table trying to figure the ending of his final episode of the season. He hears the sound of a car door and looks back in time to see the moment that Jen first arrived in Capeside. The scene fades to Lily and Alexander playing together in the back yard. He looks back over the creek, and sees when Joey comes walking up to join him from his pier.]
Dawson: Hey.
Joey: How ya doing?
Dawson: Surviving. You?
Joey: It's been a long day.
Dawson: Yeah.
Joey: Are you writing?
Dawson: No. The curse of an unwritten ending.
Joey: Oh. Make it a happy one, please. I can't take any more sad ones. Stay away from the life and death of it all.
Dawson: It's interesting how people use that expression-- life and death. As if to imply that life is the opposite of death, but birth is the opposite of death. Life... has no opposite.
Joey: I never thought of it that way.
Dawson: Well, leave it to me to over think it.
Joey: You are the writer.
Dawson: Yeah. This writer has decided it doesn't matter how it ends... because fiction is fiction, and for the first time, in a long time... [Sighs] My life is real. It doesn't matter who ends up with who. Because in some unearthly way... it's always gonna be you and me.
Joey: Soul mates.
Dawson: What we have goes beyond friendship, beyond lovers. It's forever.
Joey: [Softly] Yes, it is. I love you, Dawson.
Dawson: I love you, too, Joey.
[The hear giggling and they turn around to see Lilly up in Dawsons room, and Alexander at the bottom of the ladder.]
Lily: Come on, Alexander! Come on! Only a few more steps! You can do it!
Joey: [Laughs] You and me, always.
Dawson: Always.
Dawson then turns to Joey: Now I want you to listen to me because I am yours and Paceys best friend. Youre not going to leave here without him right. Because I know how much you love each other. And I am really happy for the both of you.
I think it would be great if Pacey could here you sat that. Do you want to go back to the restaurant with me? Dawson smiles and takes Joeys hand, and they walk together back down the dock to Joey boat.
Meanwhile Pacey is at the restaurant sitting with Doug trying to figure out what to do about Joey. She says to me that she been running from the love she has felt for me, but that she doesnt want to be let go. Im scared Doug. I want to just grab her and never let go. Where is she now, Pacey? Im not sure; after we were talking in the kitchen she was helping Bessie and then she said she had to go take care of something and left. (As Doug and Pacey are sitting having a drink, Dawson and Joey walk up holding hands, which immediately makes Pacey turn white as a ghost) And I love Dawson, hes my Soul mate, hes tied to my childhood, and its a love that is pure and eternally innocent.)
Pacey is quiet as can be, and Doug is watching not sure of what to make of Dawson and Joey walking up together with huge smiles on their faces.
Hey Pace, do you happen to have any champaign in the bar. He looks at Dawson with a shocked look on his face. Yeah we can scrounge up a bottle. Would you mind, I have an announcement to make. Immediately Dougs jaw drops, and Joey looks at Dawson with the biggest smile. Hey Joey you might want to bring Bessie and Jack over her before I say what I have to say. Ok, Ill go get them. Joey walks over to where she sees Bessie with jack and Amy and tells them to come join them outside.
After a few minutes Pacey comes out with the champaign poured into several glasses and puts them on the table. Joey looks at Pacey. Pace you sit down right here. Ok whats going on? Everyone here. (Dawson looks around and sees the whole gang, Jack, Amy, grams, Bessie, Joey, Pacey and Doug) Ok, first I want to say that (he stops himself as tears start down his cheek, as he looks up in the night sky) I miss you Jen, and I will never forget you, not one day for the rest of my life.
And with that everyone starts to tear up. So Im toasting you Jen, for the love and the laughter you gave to all of us, because they were such priceless gifts, which I will always cherish you for. Thank you Jen.
Everyone raises their glasses and click them and then takes a sip.
Now, to my best friend in this world, Pacey Witter, (As Dawson starts to address Pacey, Pacey doesnt notice Joey walking around the table behind him, and then sits on his lap and wraps her arms around his neck) Now Paceys eyes are squinting as hes trying to figure this out)
Pace, Dawson starts up again, I know I can speak for everyone here when I say, I couldnt be more proud of what youve accomplished in your life. And I couldnt be happier that my two best friends found true love with each other. At that moment Pacey and Joey look at each other, and more tears start dripping from their eyes and Joey starts nodding her head, and whispers in his ear, I am never going to let you go again, I love you With that a huge smile crosses Paceys face.
And whats funny, Dawson continues, is that I to am in love with a Witter as well, Doug and Pacey both look at each other, and tears and laughter start at the same time. Gretchen!!!they both burst out at the same time.
And I hope Dawson continues to not only be your best friend Pace, but someday maybe be your brother in law. I just need to catch up with the girl
Works for me Pacey replies, standing up and grabbing Joey around her waist, as she leans her head back against his shoulder and kisses his cheek.
They all hug and share a sad and happy moment, as the moon is full and glistening on the waterfront.
Later that night Joey is back at the B&B, when she picks up the phone and starts to make a call. At the same time theres a knock on the door. She hangs up the phone and goes to answer the door. Pacey is standing there, which brings a smile to Joeys face. Hey, I was just calling to see where you were. Sorry Pacey replies, I had to track down Gretchen because Dawsons on a serious mission for get together with her before he has to go back to L.A. But I squared that away, so we can just relax and enjoy our time together without any distractions.
And enjoy we shall, Joey now grabbing his hand and pulling him toward her and kissing him like she did in Hells kitchen so many years ago, the day she worked as his secretary for one day. But this time there would be no running away, no thoughts of past relationships, only the love of her life that she was never again was going to take for granted.
Pacey picks Joey up and she wraps her legs around his waist and they work their way into her room where rekindling their love is foremost on their mind. They fall onto the bed together undress each other and share those ultimate intimate moments that have been five years in the making.
Its early morning, about 6:00am Pacey gently moves out of Joeys grip and sits up just to look at her sleeping, tears start to run down his face, because he thinks he has her in his life for good, this time, and he needs to make sure of that. He knows what he has to do.
Joey opens her eyes, to see that Pacey isnt there, but she is surrounded by red roses on the bed. Looking around she notices its about 8:30am and she see a note. Joey, when you wake up come down to the dock where we used to tie up True Love Pacey.
[Scene: The beach front Jack is sitting in the sand staring out into the water alone, when Doug comes walking over to join him.]
Doug: Grams said you were here. Just thinking? Jack: Capeside's favorite pastime.
Doug: What about?
Jack: Moving.
Doug: Moving? Where?
Jack: I don't know. Boston, New York.
Doug: Why?
Jack: Amy.
Doug: Jack, you can't do that.
Jack: Yes, I can. How many gay parents do you know in Capeside?
Doug: So? How many gay teachers were there before you came back? How many gay sheriffs are there, for that matter?
Jack: Last time I checked, none. I'm tired of being first, Doug. Half my life has been about re-educating this community. What do I have to show for it?
Doug: You think there are prizes for inspiring people?
Jack: I don't want to inspire people anymore. All I want to do is give Amy a normal existence, and she's not gonna get that here. She's gonna have the same childhood that I did. Only instead of being the only gay kid, she's gonna be the only kid with a gay parent. I don't want that.
Doug: You're gonna be a gay parent no matter where you are. And, yeah, Amy is gonna face rejection. That's what it means to be a teenager.
Jack: I just want to be a good parent, Doug. I have to be.
Doug: Hey... Jack... being a good parent means knowing that your child is bound to fall down. You just have to show 'em how to get back up.
Jack: What do you know about parenting?
Doug: Not much. I'm hoping to learn quickly.
Jack: That's a sweet gesture, but, no, thank you.
Doug: It's not a gesture.
Jack: Yes, it is. With everything that we've been through, I'll be damned if we're gonna get back together over your sense of... obligation, or worse, pity.
Doug: Screw pity. I love you. I love you, Jack. I love that you're the bravest person I know... the kindest. I love that no matter what you do, your life is gonna stand out. I want to stand out with you... and your daughter. [Sighs] If you'll let me.
[Doug kisses Jack, and an elderly couple come walking down the beach and notice them, and Jack stops Doug for a minute.]
Jack: Uh...
Doug: What?
Jack: It's the Dudleys. Right there.
Doug: Evening, Mr. And Mrs. Dudley. I was just, uh... kissing my boyfriend.
Jack: That's sweet, dear.
[Both laughing]
Walking down the dock, Joey is looking for Pacey, holding one of the roses that was left on the bed, Joey has a flashback to the time she was running down this very dock to catch Pacey before he sailed off to Florida. It was the very first time she declared her love for him, and took a leap of faith. A smile crosses her face as she sees Pacey on a sail boat docked in the True Loves very spot. She reads the name on it carpe diem. She thinks about how far they have come since the last time they were on this boat. She sees pacey working on some cables and he doesnt see her yet. She stops and puts her hand out. Permission to come aboard Pacey turns and smiles. Permission most defintely granted he replies.
She climbs aboard, then grabs onto him and they just hug each other with the intent of never letting go. Where to Joey asks. New York Pacey replies. A shocked look comes across Joeys face. Pacey laughs. Well thats where you live isnt it? Now Joeys confused. Yeah but Pacey smiles, Well I just figured it would give us a chance to have some real quality time?.
He grabs her and kisses her passionately. Then they hear ehhmm They both turn and see Doug and Jack with Amy all smiling at them. Gotcha Pacey grinning like a little boy that pulled one over on his girl like the time he Dawson and jack pulled the senior prank and framed Drue.
Ok, Joey suspiciously declares whats going on Well lets just say we have a special trip to make Pacey replies.
Chapter 2
Grams, Bessie and Alex coming walking down the pier as Doug steps onto the boat. Jack, were here Grams bellows as she walking side by side with Bessie Oh good jack replies. Ok sweetie, you going to spend the day with grams and Bessie and Alex and Daddy and Doug will be back a little later. He passes her to Doug who gives her a big Kiss, then Jack does the same before handing her over to grams.
Ok Dougie we are ready Aye Aye Captain. With that they release the tie downs and start to maneuver the boat out of the marina, with Doug and Jack handling the sails and the driving of the boat and Pacey grabbing Joey around her waist and having her sit next to him, her head resting on his shoulder, still perplexed by what is going on. Well you must be somebody special in this town to have the sheriff be you own personal tour guide Joey suggests. Yah well its hard to find good help for sailing when youre the best at it so I had to get the next best thing that Capeside had to offer. But Doug and jack were the only ones available so I settled for them.
A few hours go buy, as Pacey and Joey enjoy the day on the boat with the guys, Joey still not knowing why theyre on this special adventure, and then suddenly Doug looks at Pacey and says, this looks pretty good. Yeah I agree
With that Pacey stands up and grabs Joeys hand. Do you recognize this place Joey She looks at him with that are you kidding me look. Well Pace, we do have a lot of familiar looking water, but I dont recall anything specifically familiar about it Well then let me refresh your memory He picks Joey and with both of them fully clothed he jumps with her in his arms into the water just like the day they came back from their summer trip Joey is screaming as they fall in. Doug and Jack are just rolling with laughter on the boat,
As they resurface from the jump in Joey is yelling at the top of her lungs at Pacey, Are you crazy She starts splashing water in his face, and while fighting off the water, Pacey grabs her. Yes Potter, I am crazy, for ever letting you out of my life I just wanted to tell you that in the most unique and crazy way I could think of And I also want you to remember that when it comes to craziness in your life, I will always be here to go through it with you. Jumping in the water together here seemed like a chance for us to have a new beginning, and wash away the things that were confusing for both of us all these years. Fresh water, fresh start for the rest of our lives. As they tread water together, Joey looks at him, be careful what you wish for you just might get it
Doug and Jack reach out to help them back in the boat, where they grab towels and blankets to dry off and warm up. You knew about this didnt you, Jack At this point Joey is soaking wet and not very happy about it, but a little smile crosses her face as Pacey puts his arms around her to keep her warm and loved. Naw he replies, and I didnt bring my camera to capture the moment either Ok boys Pacey proclaims, I have to get this young lady back to New York so we better head to shore Yeh
They reach the dock and disembark the boat, and the four of them walk together along the boardwalk arms around each others shoulders as one family, two brothers with their significant others. They arrive back at the B&B where Grams and Bessie are there with Alex and Amy.
So how was the trip Bessie says with a smirk as she sees Joey walk in still a little damp from the extra bath she wasnt expecting to be taking today. Ya Joey how was the trip today Pacey adds, knowing hes very close to getting himself in deeper water with Joey. Lets just say it was a wash
Do I even want to know? They both look at each other staring for a minute, and then break the stare with an outburst of laughter. Then Joey hears her cell phone ringing to tell her she has messages. Before she heads over to pick it up Pacey asks What time does your flight leave A dose of reality sets into the room as she looks at him and says 9:30. Ok Ill finish up at the restaurant by 7 and come get you. Ok Ill see you later
Pacey wait :They walk out the door to Paceys truck, and she kisses him, holding on for dear life. She pulls away far enough to look in his eyes. You will make the necessary arrangements right Im way ahead of you Dont worry Really Yes Really Not that you deserve to hear such things, you being from New York and all Ill be back
With that Joey puts her hands on Paceys cheeks and kisses him. I love you Mmmh
I love you to Potter
As he drives away, a huge smile lingers on Joeys face as she tucks a hair behind her ear, watching him drive away her eyes glazed over with the knowledge that her head and her heart are finally in sync. As he drove down Main Street heading for his apartment near the Ice House, he saw the wall. It was painted over to blend in with the brick that was the building it was attached to. Looking around at this town the one hed been living in for all but two years of his life, nickname townie, certainly applied to him. He had made a name for himself in this town, had changed his image, was a business owner: all the things no one would have thought he could accomplish, and his best friend who hed grown up with, who he made the ultimate struggle with for the woman he loved more than any other, no matter who hed been with in the last 10 years, had even come to terms with this reality, and even his own heart, knowing who he wanted. Had he paid the price for his happiness? Is it possible that he would finally feel all this. And if this was the time to reap the reward of long sacrifices, why did it have to come at the expense of the death of their friend.
Happy was what he was determined to be, and happy was what he was going to make sure Joey was. And it might even be in his power, even in just a small way, to help Dawson be as happy as he was going to be.
The door to the B&B opens and Pacey walks in. Hey Bessie says to Pacey as he sits down on the sofa. Hey, where is Joey Shell be right out A minute later Joey appears in a very tight fitting pair of jeans and top that makes Paceys mouth drop. Hey pace, let me just get my jacket and Ill be ready.
Wheres your bag. Oh Ill get it, it just on the bed in there. Thats ok Potter as he gets up to go retrieve it from the bedroom Thanks Pace
Any idea when well see you again Joey Bessie asks as she picks up Alex to walk out with her and Pacey Hopefully soon, I dont even want to think about the work I have waiting for me. A dozen messages I have not even listen to in two days.
Ok well dont let it get you to crazy ok. As Pacey walks ahead to put her bag. To tell you the truth Bessie, as much work as I have to catch up on, my only concern is that Im leaving and I already miss him, and dont know when Im going to be with. I dont want to leave But I know I have to get back Yes, you do Dont worry, Ill do what ever I can to help him figure this out. Thanks Bessie
They get in the truck, and Pacey pulls out, Bessie and Alex waiving at Joey. We love you
As they are heading down to the airport the ride is silent. Tears all already rolling down Joeys cheeks. Whats the matter Potter You know what the matter is I miss you already I know But look I will get things together so I can get up there just as soon as I can.
They get to the airport, and park about 100 feet from the airport terminal. Pacey gets out and grabs her bag, and opens the door for Joey, who climbs out and grabs his hand.
They walk together to the point where only ticketed passengers can go beyond, and they stop and look at each other. Then Pacey pulls her in tight, nuzzling her nose, as if they are dancing together even though there is no music.
Pace, I dont wanna go Its gonna be ok Joey, I promise you
Joey just looks at him and grabs him so tight and tears just come pouring out of hers and his eyes. Then she lets go and goes into the terminal, wiping her face as she gets in line to check in.
Pacey still stands outside as she gets checked in, then as she grabs her ticket she turns around and sees him, and he mouths the words, I love you She mouths I love you back, then turns around and heads for the gate.
As she sat waiting for the flight which would be leaving in about 30 minutes, her heart started to race as she recalled the other times in her life when she felt this incredible heartache. Her moms death, when her dad went to prison, when Dawson rejected her, and when pacey broke up with her at the prom.
None of it compared to leaving him right now, knowing how much time they hadnt had each other, and now she would still have to wait longer.
They were now boarding and seating the passengers. The took her place in line, and slowly moved her way closer to the plane finally stepping into the cabin, finding her seat and fastening her seatbelt. The flight was not full so the seat next to her was at the moment unoccupied. She thought to her self, Ok Potter, were going to focus on the positive. Your going to get back to work, and your going to plan out things and places your going to show Pacey, when he finally is able to come see you. Taking deep breaths she kept telling herself no more crying, just focus on the positive. As she looked out the window, the plane backs out of the gate, and begins to taxi for take off. Twenty minutes later the pilot comes on and declares the plane at cruising altitude and to feel free to move in the cabin. Joey grabs a pillow from one of the overheads then sits back down. As she just about to doze of she hears a voice, excuse me, but is this seat taken
She looks up sort of groggy, and then goes practically into shocked by who she sees?
Chapter Three:
While Joey sits there still in shock, by who she sees, the passenger takes the seats right next to her and grabs her hand. Long time no see stranger. Joey can only smile like the time Pacey told her he would simply have to be happy to be the Neil Armstrong of the bunch. Finally after about a minute Joey asks So you go to New York much?
Actually this is my first time. Kind of looking for a tour guide. Know anyone who might know the city enough to show me around. Well Ill have to check on my resources to find you a reliable candidate. You look really tired Joey, Get some sleep, Well talk some more later Joey puts the pillow between the two of them and lays her head down with a smile on her face.
Pacey! Pacey! Pacey! Pacey! Pace! Pacey?
Pacey: You want something, jo?
Joey: I want to talk to you.
Pacey: No, no. A bit late for this now. I'm leaving. You can't stop me, so don't even try.
Joey: No. That's not why I'm here.
Pacey: So why are you here? You wanna say good-bye again? Maybe you wanted to rub it in a little bit, huh?
Joey: Look, I don't want to stop you, Pacey, and I don't want to stop Dawson, and I don't want to be stopped, not by either of you, not by anyone, see? I mean, that's what this whole year has been about. We've been trying to stop each other from moving on and from growing up, but...But not you. I mean, you're different, and... You've challenged me every step of the way and you've been there every step of the way.
Pacey: Jo, departure time is in t-minus 30 seconds, so if there's a point, I suggest you get to it.
Joey: I think Im in love with you.
Pacey: You think or you know?
Joey: I know. I've known it since the moment you kissed me and maybe even before that. And--[exhales]-- scary as it is, I don't want to deny it any more, Pacey. I don't want to run from it, and I don't want to let it run from me.
Pacey: So... What are we gonna do here, jo?
Joey: I wanna come with you.
Pacey: Ha. What? You crazy?
Joey: Mm-mmm. I wanna stop standing still. I wanna move forward. I wanna come with you.
Pacey: What bout Bessie and the B&B? They need you.
Joey: Not as much as I need you, Pacey.
Pacey: Ah-ah-ah!
Joey: [Chuckles] permission to come aboard?
Pacey: Permission granted. You can swim, can't you?
Joey: Of course. I'm just kinda worried about the next change of clothes.
Pacey: That's nothing to worry about. We're gonna hit the next port in a few days.
Joey: Few days?
Pacey: Yeah! Or a few days after that. Who really cares?
Pacey: So, typically when couples engage in the sort of activity that we engaged in last night, there is some sort of morning-after discussion.
Joey: About what?
Pacey: Well, it's a bit like a post-game wrap-up.
Joey: I see. You want to know if you were any good.
Pacey: Well, I'd really rather know if it was good for you.
Joey: Of course. You being Pacey Witter, friend to women and all.
Pacey: Precisely.
Joey: It was very nice.
Pacey: Nice?
Joey: Yes.
Pacey: [Clears throat] just "nice," huh?
Joey: What's wrong with "nice?"
Pacey: There's nothing wrong with "nice." I mean, there's nothing wrong with "great," either. Hell, there's nothing particularly offensive with "mind-blowing" or "transcendent."
Joey: Sorry, pace, I left my thesaurus at home. I didn't know I was going to get yelled at for my vocabulary.
Pacey: I'm not too worried about your vocabulary.
Joey: You know, maybe "nice" means everything to me, Pacey. Maybe "nice" is all a girl can manage the morning after her first time, because, as you know, it's not something Ive ever experienced before. So I can't really sit here and honestly say that something is "great" or "mind-blowing" or "transcendent" if I have nothing to compare it to.
Pacey: Because there are certain... Benchmarks in the sexual experience.
Joey: What do you mean?
Pacey: There are certain things that happen or don't happen over the course of the evening that
Joey: Are you asking me if I
Pacey: Yes!
Joey: Can we please not talk about that?
Pacey: Why?
Joey: Because it's not important.
Pacey: Ok, it might not be important to you, but it's really important to me.
Joey: This isn't all about you, you know. You think you're feeling insecure?! Do you have any idea what it's like to be me this morning?
Pacey: I don't understand.
Joey: Of course you dont.
Pacey: Well, maybe you'd like to enlighten me, then.
Joey: Did you ever stop and think that maybe I might be wondering how I measure up? How I fit into the picture that includes not only one but 2 prior sexual relationships, both of which meant a great deal to you?
Pacey: I didn't even know girls thought like that.
Joey: Does the word "duh" mean anything?
Pacey: Jo, you were great.
Joey: Great?
Pacey: Yes, great. Which is a hell of a lot better than "nice," let me tell you.
Joey: And completely beside the point.
Pacey: Jo, you were great. You were fantastic. You were every glowing adjective under the sun. I want to run out and tell the entire world what I did last night and who I did it with.
Joey: You're not really planning on doing that, are you?
Pacey: Well, no, but
Joey: Good.
Pacey: Why is that good?
Joey: Because it's private, and I really want to keep it that way. I really don't want the whole world to know about our sex life.
Pacey: Mmm. I think I get it. By "the whole world," what you really mean is Dawson.
Joey: Why does it have to be about that? Why can't it just be the fact that I don't want to hurt him any more than I already have?
Pacey: I don't want to hurt him, either. Ok? I dont. But I do want to be able to have sex with my girlfriend, whom I adore, without having to worry about the soap operatic repercussions of him finding out. Let me ask you one question, Jo. What would you say to him? You know, if he were here right now and he asked you, what would you tell him?
Joey: Well, I would have to tell him the truth.
Pacey: And you'd do that?
Joey: Yes. Absolutely.
[There is a big pause]
Pacey: Wanna know something funny? You haven't touched me.
Joey: What?
Pacey: You haven't touched me all morning. And here I was thinking that sex brought people closer together.
Joey: You wanna know why it was so nice, Pacey? You probably don't even remember, but... There was this thing. There you were, above me, and you--you brushed my hair over my forehead... And it felt really nice. Made me feel safe. Like no matter what, you were gonna be there and you were gonna protect me. Years from now, when I look back, I'm really not gonna remember the clumsy positioning or the morning-after awkwardness or whether or not the experience itself met the textbook definition of great sex. I'm gonna remember how sweet you were. How you took me to this brand new place. Pace, I'm glad I had sex. And I'm really glad that I had sex with you. But now, I really just kinda wanna go home. So we can do it again.
Dawson: [Sighs] did something happen on the ski trip?
Joey: What do you mean?
Dawson: Well, I have this feeling-- kind of unshakable feeling-- that, uh, something happened. It's just a feeling. And you don't have to answer me if you don't want to, but...
Joey: What are you asking me?
Dawson: I'm asking you if you slept with Pacey.
Joey: It's kind of personal, don't you think?
Dawson: I think it's really personal.
Joey: I mean, what if... What if I was to stand here and ask you if you've slept with Gretchen.
Dawson: The answer would be no. But you're right. It's very personal and it's none of my business and I apologize. I'm sorry. Ok. I, uh... You know, Jo, I guess I just-- I want you to know that Im not holding you to anything that we might have said in the past. Ok? I mean... I want you to live your life and be happy and enjoy everything that goes along with that. And--and... I know that sometimes you make a promise and you mean it at the time, but then life gets in the way and it makes it impossible to keep.
Joey: A couple of years ago, if someone were to tell me that we'd be standing here having this conversation, I would have referred them to the nearest asylum. But things aren't exactly turning out the way that I necessarily thought they would. A couple of years ago, if you would've asked me who the first person I was going to have sex with was, I would've answered unequivocally... Dawson leery, that's who. And the possibility of sleeping with anybody else never even occurred to me. Especially not Pacey.
Dawson: So what are you saying, Jo?
Joey: No. I have not slept with Pacey.
Dawson: You-- oh. Uh... Oh. I'm sorry. That was a sigh of relief you just heard. I... Um..
Joey: Ah, well, good night.
Dawson: Good night, Jo.
Joey: Even when everything is perfect, being with you doesn't feel right, and I'm sorry. Look, everything tonight-- I mean, tonight was lovely and fun and... you've become this... I mean, this amazing man, but it doesnt... I'm sorry. I dont... I don't feel it. And I can't do this with you.
Pacey: Ok, Joey, just slow down for a second.
Joey: No, Pace, its... it's true and... I'm sorry.
Pacey: So what, you're scared. Right? You're scared. And so am I, believe me. And I'm scared because I don't know where this thing is going, Jo. As in, I think it could go anywhere. This could be it.
Joey: It won't be.
Pacey: How could you possibly know that? I mean, really. Last week, you're onboard, and now you're just psychically telling me that this could never be something great. You can't possibly know that, because we don't know that, Joey.
Joey: And I'm sorry. I know that this is such a horrible thing to say.
Pacey: But how? How could you know? And when did you make this decision, tonight? I mean, I thought tonight was going great.
Joey: It was. It was great.
Pacey: So then when? And don't tell me that you're not scared, because I know that you are. I mean, I've known you too long and seen you push away too many good things to let you push me away right now. My whole life, Joey, my whole life you have been the most beautiful thing in my orbit. And my feelings for you were what proved to me that I could be great. And those feelings were stronger and were wiser and more persistent and more resilient than anything else about me.
Joey: Pacey, stop.
Pacey: Jo
Joey: Pacey!
Pacey: When I was afraid of everything, I was never afraid to love you, and I could love you again. I could. Im tell you, this could
Joey: Pacey, no. Pacey, stop! Eddie came back. I'm sorry. He came back last night. He came to the bar
Joey stands on the dance floor, thinking to herself, what have I just done. Am I crazy. I love that man, so why am I doing this. Pacey, Pacey,
Suddenly Joey wakes up a little startled and shes in the baggage claim area of JFK. Oh my god, she thinks to herself, thank god, just a bad dream. Wheres Witter. Cmon where did you go? There you are. Hey Joey, you ok. Yeah,I must have dosed off. Didnt realize how tired I was.
Suddenly Joeys cell phone rings and she sees the caller id, and answers. Hey handsome Yeah we landed about twenty minutes ago and now were in the baggage claim. Ill call you when we get to my apartment. Yah you could say it was a pleasant surprise. Ok hold on, I love you too Here,he wants to talk to you. hey you, what going on. Yes I will, just like I promised you. Your welcome. Talk to you later.
Chapter Four
As she takes her cell phone back Joey has a puzzled look on her face. Ok Gretch
Spill after hearing her remarks to Pacey on the phone. All in good time my little chicketee. Lets get my bag and then Ill fill you in. As they both stand patiently waiting for Gretchens bag, Joeys tries to make sense of all that has happened. Wondering about this coincidence of Gretchen being on the same plane as her, coming to New York, what conversation she has had with Pacey, and wondering if she knows what Dawson said about her. It had been a very long time since she had seen Gretchen, and they hadnt exactly parted on great terms.
Over there the green bag Joey sees it and pulls it off the pulley .Shes astonished at how heavy it is. You gonna be here a while? Actually no, not that long, but I will be traveling for a little while.
So where are you staying Gretch Thats a very good question Gretchen pulls a piece of paper out of her purse and looks it over. Ok its the Sheraton New York on 7th Ave.
Joey gives her that half crooked smile. Do you know the place Joey. Yeah I do. Its right down the street from where I live. Oh cool, so we can share one of the infamous New York cabs. Joey laughs, as the coincidence just keep on rolling. They head for the exit, and just as they get to the curb, Joey looks up and notices a relatively thin blond man just about 10 feet away looking around waiting. Once again her heart starts to race.
She cant believe her eyes. Even though its has been years since shes seen him, and time has put a mature presence on him, there is no mistaking that face.
Gretchen come with me for a minute Joey starts to move toward him, and suddenly another woman grabs his hand and kisses him. This doesnt stop Joey as she walks up right behind him and taps him on the shoulder. He turns his head as she does this and looks at her. He has a look on his face as if a puzzle has just been presented to him.
Joey pauses as he looks at her, and is now amazed. You dont remember me?
Charlie Todd, I cant believe it! Hes taken back by the assertiveness of her voice.
Im sorry he says, please forgive me, but youll have to refresh my memory At this point the woman holding his hand now has a nervous look on her face as all this is transpiring in front of her. Joey Potter friend of Jen Lindley; Worthington College?.
All of a sudden it hits him Joooeeey!! Oh my God!! Joey Potter!! Wow!
They both then are smiling and laughing, when the woman standing next to him elbows him in the side. Oh Im sorry honey Im just kinda in shock! Ok, introductions are in order. Joey Potter, this is my wife Cassandra; Cassandra this is Jo, Im sorry, it was Josephine wasnt it. Josephine Potter. Cassandra, before I started on my first tour, Joey sang with us for a couple of gigs, and we hung out one spring break in Florida. I was actually trying to date Joey at the time, but she sent me on my way when an opportunity came for me to join my first band on tour. Oh I see, Cassandra remarks half sarcastic. Well nice to meet you Joey, is it? A pleasure, Joey smirks back. So, Charlie what brings you to New York. Well actually Cassandra is from here and were in town to see her folks. How about you. Im a resident as well. Joey reaches into her purse Um. Joey tucks her hair behind her ear, heres my card, maybe we can catch up some time Congratulations by the way!
Thanks Joey, Yeah that sounds great. Well be here for a week, so well give you a call. Great. It was very nice meeting you Cassandra Likewise Joey With that Joey and Gretchen hale a cab and are on their way.
As their riding in the cab Joey turns to Grethen. Well this has been a day just full of suprises. Joey takes a deep breath. Hey Gretchen, can I ask a favor Sure Joey, what is it. Um, since you have that room at the Sheraton, would you mind having a roommate tonight. I just dont think Im ready to go back to my place right now. Things have changed dramatically in my life recently and Im a little overwhelmed at the moment. Actually Joey, I would really like that. Great. Anyways, we have a lot to catch up on.
Do you need to stop by you place tonight for anything. No, I have what I need from the trip, so we can just go to the hotel. Ok then, Sheraton New York please driver.
As Joey looks out the window taking in the city that she has called home for the last five years it is now a different place for her. For her right now, its just a place where she works, and lives, and where Pacey isnt. Still not knowing all the facts about Gretchens arrival, she actually feels confort in having her there, because it makes her feel like Paceys there with her indirectly. Its almost like that good pill syndrome again. She looks up at the nightline of New York and prays that Pacey will be there soon.
The phone is ringing in Pacey apartment. Hes snoring away, as the phone rings, and rings. Finally the machine picks up. Hey its Pacey, leave a message here or take your chances at the Ice House. Thanks..beepA voice is heard in the machine. Witter can you hear me, I know its late, actually I think its about 2am. Pacey is groggy but he hears the voice, and scrambles to get the phone. Hey, Joey, Im here. You ok
Yeah she replies. I told you I would call when I got to my place, but I am actually going to stay at the hotel with Gretchen.
Pacey pauses for a minute then asks. Was he still there Jo. Actually I dont know cause I didnt even stop by there. We just came straight here. Ok, well thats good. Take your time. You will know when to go back there. Yeah, when youre here. Pacey can only smile when she says that. Ill be there soon Potter. Good night beautiful, I love you. Good night my love. Pacey hears the buzz sound of her hanging up the phone, and lays back down just staring at the ceiling. Ok Witter he think to himself, you gotta get yourself to New York and not let the restaurant that youve worked so hard to establish not fall apart? How?
This picks up right where Dawson and Joey are talking on the picknick bench, right before they cut to The Creek in the finally.
Everything that happened in the show is still happened.

How?
